A Break in Penang Malaysia

We are just finishing a 4 day break in Penang Malaysia before we head over to the Philippines to visit our friends for some visiting, boating and diving. While in Penang, we stayed at the incredible Lone Pine Hotel on Batu Ferringhi Beach.  What a gorgeous hotel and the most beautiful pool. The service was amazing. Every little detail had been thought of. From the many staff that always seemed to be where you needed them yet were not in the way, to the beautiful pool, the cocktail service and the mid-afternoon hand towels delivered right from the freezer to guests at the pool. Which was great as the temperature was hovering near 40 degrees C. At the end of the day we would return to our room to find the evening turn down service had tidied the room and replaced towels with fresh and a restocked complimentary mini-bar. We stay in a lot of hotels and the service in this one was by far the best we have ever had. Highly recommend it to all travellers.

Outside the hotel was a very large night market. Not unlike the night markets in Thailand where you can buy any number of watches, ties, T-shirts, purses etc. Luckily we didn’t need any of these treasures but within the market was this great hawker stall complex. Kind of a Malaysian food court. We settled down to a sizzling platter of huge prawns with garlic and chill with fried noodles and vegetables for $9. Soon enough a fellow arrived with an ice bucket with a tall Tiger beer and 2 glasses. How did he know?? A couple of those $6 treasures and then we wandered down a couple of stalls and came across a Tandoori vendor. Couldn’t resist. We had a tandoori chicken, garlic naan bread, rice and a chicken vindaloo. And…..a fresh iced Tiger beer. $14 all in. We had plans to dine at a couple of the local “must-see” restaurants but after the first night at the hawker stalls, we had to return on our last night for more. We went in to one huge seafood restaurant and couldn’t believe the rows of fish tanks for you to pick your dinner from. They had prawns, crabs , lobsters and the usual fare found at these places but they also had Moray Eel and this huge Grouper. This thing must have weighed 40 lbs but the sign said 28 Ringgit ($9) per 100 grams. I was going to order 100 grams to go and see what conversation I got out of it. Hilarious I’m sure. But not for the fish.

We now sit in the Penang airport at Starbuck’s having tea and using their Wi-fi to write this post. Catching a one hour ($27) flight back to Kuala Lumpur and then a 4 hr flight to Clark/Angeles outside of Manila. We are really excited to see Chris and Sandra on Moken. We haven’t seen them since before they left Canada last fall. It will a great time to catch up and see some of the Philippines. We have never been there before and are really looking forward to the trip. Thx for stopping by for an update. Bye for now.
